Posted by slazarus on August 27, 2019 at 09:28 am

Congratulations to Cindy Finn, who was recently appointed Director General of the Lester B. Pearson School Board. Each month Dr. Finn will share what she's seen, the amazing students, teachers and staff she's met, and all that she's learned as she visits the incredible schools and centres that make up the LBPSB.

Kicking Off the 2019-2020 School Year

Welcome back everyone! It is an honour and privilege to welcome you all to the 2019-2020 school year. While the summer break never feels quite long enough, the LBPSB community could not be more excited to open our doors and welcome new and returning students.

Earlier today, teachers and staff returned to their schools and classrooms, and the enthusiasm was palpable around the board. I speak on behalf of many when I say that we are fortunate to have such dedicated and caring professionals working in our schools.

These last few days of summer break can definitely be an emotionally charged time for many. Excitement and anticipation are heightened, plans are made (and then altered), as the familiar routine begins again. To all our students, families, and staff - let me reassure you that those 1st day jitters are completely understandable. I myself am experiencing those feelings of nervous excitement as I step into my new role as Director General.

Sitting here tonight, I am humbled and grateful. I deeply appreciate the opportunity to lead such an outstanding organization as I am fortunate to work with such talented and dedicated colleagues. We are proud that our vision of excellence for all is rooted in our values of Community, Inclusion, Innovation, Integrity, and Respect. It is my commitment to the entire LBPSB community that this vision will be carried forward over the coming years.

I also wanted to thank the Council of Commissioners and my colleagues for their encouragement and support. It cannot be said enough - LBPSB’s sense of community is astounding, but never surprising.

As I visit our schools and centres in the coming months, I look forward to meeting students, teachers, staff, and families.  It is an honour to have the opportunity to work, learn and grow together, as we launch what is sure to be an incredibly exciting, rewarding, and fun school year!

Thank You Caretakers

I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible work of our caretakers and maintenance staff over the summer. Whether through pouring rain or scorching heat, these teams were hard at work making sure that every school and centre is in tiptop shape. Each year, the caretakers go above and beyond to make sure that renovations and upgrades are completed on time and within budget. Because of this strong work ethic, outstanding organization, and attention to detail, every LBPSB building can serve as a warm and welcoming space for our students. Thank you and keep up the excellent work!

Camp Venture

Last week, I paid a visit to Camp Venture and met some incredible students and staff.  Housed at Lasalle Jr. Elementary School, Camp Venture offers a 2-week immersive experience in social-emotional learning and relationship-building through engaging play, arts activities, and games. Each day, campers focus on a different prosocial skill like kindness or respect. I was lucky to visit when the group was discussing the importance of empathy. The camp also provides our students with an opportunity for a smooth transition back into the structure and routine of school.

Camp Venture is run by an incredibly dedicated of technicians and professionals from the Family and School Support and Treatment Team (FSSTT) within Student Services. Their on-going commitment to student success and well-being is much appreciated. A big thank you to the FSSTT and to the Pearson EducationalFoundation for making this camp a reality again this year.

And finally, for those counting down, - our first day of school is only 4 days away. As teachers and staff work hard to plan those memorable opening days of school, I encourage all of our students and families to cherish these final moments of summer vacation. Enjoy the sunshine, embark on new adventures, read, play, paint - do all those activities that are healthy and fun. We look forward to welcoming you into our schools and centres, rested and ready for a new chapter in your educational journey with us.

On behalf of administration at the LBPSB, we wish everyone a fantastic school year.
